Embolic Complications of Cardiomyopathy.

چکیده
The cardiomyopathy that is comnmon among the South African Bantu population has been described by diverse names, among which are "nutritional heart disease" and "cardiovascular collagenosis with parietal endocardial thrombosis". While its cause is obscure, pathologists are in agreement regarding its principal morbid anatomical features. Among the most striking of these is the endocardial thrombosis which is presumably responsible, by means of embolization, for infarction of other organs such as the lungs, spleen, kidneys, and brain. Evidence of such infarction is a common post-mortem finding, and this aspect of the morbid anatomy is well documented (Higginson, Gillanders, and Murray, 1952; Becker, Chatgidakis, and van Lingen, 1953; Higginson, Isaacson, and Simson, 1960). The clinical occurrence of visceral infarction in cardiomyopathy has not, however, been stressed. The object of this report is to show that the embolic complications may have clinically recognizable effects that may overshadow the primary cardiac disease.

Stroke and Embolic Events in Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is one of the most common genetic cardiac disorders, with markedly heterogeneous clinical manifestations and natural history. Although stroke and systemic embolic events are known to occur as complications of HCM, few data are available on the occurrence and profile of these events in this patient population. In a previous study, stroke and systemic embolic eve...
متن کاملNoncompaction Cardiomyopathy with Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease
We report a case of a 53-year-old female presenting with a new-onset heart failure that was contributed secondary to noncompaction cardiomyopathy. The diagnosis was made by echocardiogram and confirmed by cardiac MRI. Noncompaction cardiomyopathy (also known as ventricular hypertrabeculation) is a newly discovered disease. It is considered to be congenital (genetic) cardiomyopathy. It is usuall...
متن کاملPermanent unilateral blindness associated with peripartum cardiomyopathy.
Peripartum Cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a rare and ominous disease manifested in the peripartum period of women with complications concerning different organic systems. We describe a case of peripartum cardiomyopathy which was complicated with acute permanent unilateral blindness, further documented embolic retinal artery occlusion as a consequence of PPCM. This is a quite unusual event with PPCM, ...
متن کاملAn unusual case of peripartum cardiomyopathy manifesting with multiple thrombo-embolic phenomena
Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a rare form of heart failure with a reported incidence of 1 per 3000 to 1 per 4000 live births and a fatality rate of 20%-50%. Onset is usually between the last month of pregnancy and up to 5 months postpartum in previously healthy women. Although viral, autoimmune and idiopathic factors may be contributory, its etiology remains unknown. PPCM initially presen...
متن کاملProtective Effect of Delayed Ischemic Postconditioning on Embolic Stroke Complications in Female Rat
Background & Aims: Ischemic postconditioning, conducted by a series of brief occlusion and release of the bilateral common carotid arteries, has neuroprotective properties in permanent or transient models of middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion but its delayed neuroprotective effects in the embolic model of stroke, especially in female rat, have not yet been reported and were investigated ...
